Great day for the Illinois Holstein Picnic

Illinois Holstein members and friends gathered Sunday, August 29, 2011, at Probstland Dairy near Wheeler for the annual picnic.

President Kevin Wendling estimated that there were over 200 in attendance.

The Probst’s provided meat, table service, and beverages. Prairie Farms provided milk and ice cream.

After lunch wagon ride tours were offered to see the dairy which includes 3 stall barns and the parallel parlor. The children could be seen playing games following their time on the wagon. Probstland is the breeder of Probstland Ernesto.

The official announcement was made of Illinois Holstein Association's new Treasure and Secretary. Andrew M. Smith of Davis, Ill., is the new treasure. He is the son of Jerry Smith of Cleafield Holsteins. He has experience as V.P. in Government Banking at U.S. Bank and also has several years experience as a past county treasurer.

The new secretary is Tina (Hall) Yagow from Rochelle, Ill. Tina graduated from the U of I with a degree in Agriculutre Communications and Education; she is currently an administrative assistant for Hintzsche Oil.

Boyd & Sandy Schaufelberger family welcomes first grandchild

Boyd and Sandy Schaufelberger are grandparents for the first time. Lydia Grace Davis was born August 17, 2011, at 10:48 p.m.. She weighed 7 lbs and 14.5 oz, and is 20.5 inches long. Parents are Erin and Kris Daivs of Elkhart, Ill..

Keith Funk passes away

The Illinois Holstein Association is sorry to share the sad news of the passing of long time member Keith Funk of Eureka. Keith passed away Friday, August 26 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria following a stroke.

Keith is survived by his wife, Lavonne, two sons, four daughters, eight grand children, his mother and one sister.

Keith began his career teaching Agriculture at Roanoke-Benson High School. He later worked as the Woodford County 4-H Extension Advisor and then in his current position as District Manager for Accelerated Genetics, a position he held for over 25 years.

Keith had a great love for dairy cows and enjoyed sharing his wisdom and expertise with his clients.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Worship Hall. Visitation will be Monday evening from 4:00-8:00 PM at Roanoke Apostolic Christian Fellowship Hall and from 9:00-9:45 AM on Tuesday before the service. Burial will be in the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crosspoint Community Church Building Fund or to Heart House, both in Eureka. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.knappjohnsonharris.com.

Illinois Holstein State Picnic

Don’t forget the Illinois Holstein Picnic will be held this Sunday, August 28 at Probstland Dairy, Inc. in Wheeler, IL.

Please bring a dish to pass. Meat, drinks and table service will be provided.

Tours of the dairy will follow the noon meal.

From I-70 at Effingham travel seven miles east out of Effingham to the Montrose Exit, Number 105. Head south at the exit on 2300th Street for approximately 4.5 miles. Look for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and take the next left onto 1300th Ave. Stay on 1300th Ave. for 2 miles, passing through two 90 degree turns. Watch for the Island Grove water tower and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and turn right onto 200E at that intersection. The farm is located ½ mile ahead; watch for the farm sign out front.

To avoid dirt roads possibly suggested by GPS directions, follow the directions above.

Thomas J Kuhn Passes awayMENDON, Ill. -- Thomas J. Kuhn, 74, of 2144 E. 1150th St., Mendon, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2011) in St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Tom was born April 17, 1937, in Quincy, a son of Albert E. and Genevieve A. Ohnemus Kuhn. He married Barbara A. Tournear on Nov. 24, 1962, in St. Brigid Catholic Church in Liberty, and she survives. 

Tom was a lifelong dairy farmer and was owner-operator of a can milk route for four and a half years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962, stationed in Germany.  He attended St. Francis Catholic Church. Tom was a charter member of the Adams County Olde Tyme Association, and was in attendance at its organizational meeting. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Adams County Farm Bureau, Mississippi Valley Holstein Club and the Holstein Association of the USA. 

He enjoyed and was proud to breed and market Registered Holstein Bulls, selling over 300 bulls, most of them to repeat customers. Tom exhibited Registered Holsteins with his family for 61 years at the Adams County Fair. Tom had also exhibited Registered Shropshire Sheep, Registered Spotted Poland China Hogs and New Zealand White Rabbits with his family at various local and state competitions. Tom was a dedicated and lifelong supporter of Catholic schools and education. He was one of the original WTAD rain gauge reporters, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Tom was an International Harvester enthusiast, especially proud of his 1954 Super H and he had a large and unique collection of antique dairy memorabilia.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, survivors also include his eight children, Myra Kuhn of Quincy, Melvin Kuhn of Sioux Falls, S.D., Marvin and Myron Kuhn, both of Mendon, Anaise (Derek) England of Edina, Mo., Bob Kuhn of Springfield, and Matthew T. and Aaron Kuhn, both of Mendon; three grandsons, Thomas, Daniel and John England of Edina; brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Sorrill, Ruth (Leo) Zanger, Martha (Dewey) Tuley, all of Quincy, Eugene (Joan) Kuhn of Ursa and Rachel (Bob) Askins of Quincy; his mother-in-law, Mildred Tournear of Quincy; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert T. Kuhn; and a sister, Rosemary Zanger. Services were held Aug. 10 in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home with a funeral Mass later at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 37.

Visitation was Aug. 9, from 4-8 in the funeral home.
